How to remove annotations from a PDF online

  1. Click Choose File or drag your PDF into the upload zone.
  2. The tool scans the file and detects all annotation objects — comments, highlights, sticky notes, drawings, and other markup layers.
  3. Click Remove Annotations to strip every annotation from every page.
  4. Download the clean PDF. Page content, images, and form fields are unchanged.

What counts as an annotation — and what stays

PDF annotations are a distinct layer that sits on top of page content. This includes text comments, sticky notes, highlights, underlines, strikethroughs, freehand ink drawings, and any shape or callout added as markup during review. When you remove annotations, all of those objects are deleted and the underlying page — body text, images, embedded fonts, form fields — is preserved exactly as it was. This is different from flattening a PDF, which merges annotations into the static page content, locking them in permanently and making them uneditable. Annotation removal does the opposite: the markup disappears entirely, leaving no trace in the output file.

When to use annotation removal

Common use cases: cleaning up a reviewed draft before publishing or printing; stripping reviewer comments before sending a final version to a client; removing highlights and notes from a study copy you want to share; and privacy hygiene — PDF comments embed the reviewer's name, timestamp, and sometimes machine details, so removing annotations locally before sharing prevents that metadata from reaching the recipient.

Frequently asked questions

What types of annotations does this tool remove?

It removes all PDF annotation objects: text comments, sticky notes, highlights, underlines, strikethroughs, freehand ink drawings, geometric shapes drawn as markup, and callout annotations. Page content — body text, images, and embedded fonts — is left completely intact.

Does it remove form fields or digital signatures too?

No. Form fields (text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns) and digital signature fields are separate PDF objects and are not touched. This tool targets annotation layers only, so interactive forms remain fully functional after processing.

What is the difference between removing annotations and flattening a PDF?

Flattening merges annotations into the page content, making them permanent but no longer editable or selectable — the markup becomes part of the static page. Removing annotations deletes them entirely, so the page returns to its original unmarked state. Use flattening when you want to lock in changes; use annotation removal when you want a clean copy with no trace of the markup.

Are reviewer names and comment text kept private when I process the file?

Yes. The entire process runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly — no file data is transmitted to any server. Reviewer names, comment text, and any other annotation metadata are stripped from the output file and never leave your device.
