  2. VoxScan renders every form field, annotation, and markup into the page as fixed content.
  3. Click Flatten PDF — your locked, non-editable copy downloads instantly.

What flattening a PDF actually does

A regular PDF can carry interactive layers on top of the page: fillable form fields, comment annotations, highlights, stamps, and signature widgets. Flattening merges those layers permanently into the underlying page, so editable objects become fixed text and graphics. The document looks identical afterwards, but no one can change the answers in a form, move a stamp, or pull structured data back out of the fields.

When to use PDF flattening

Flatten a completed form before you send it so the recipient cannot alter your entries, lock review comments so they can no longer be edited or deleted, or prepare a file for printing when form fields render inconsistently on certain printers. It also resolves a common merge problem: when two PDFs contain form fields with the same internal names, flattening them first stops the values from clashing. Many teams flatten documents as the final step before long-term archiving.

Frequently asked questions

Will flattening change how my PDF looks?

No. Flattening locks the existing appearance in place — layout, fonts, and images stay exactly as they were. Only the ability to edit fields and annotations is removed.

Can I still edit the form fields after flattening?

No, and that is the point. Once a field is flattened it becomes part of the page. Keep an unflattened copy if you may need to change the values later.

Does flattening remove a digital signature?

Flattening renders the signature appearance into the page as static content, which invalidates the cryptographic signature. If you need a verifiable signature, sign the document after flattening, not before.

Are my files uploaded to be flattened?

No. VoxScan flattens the PDF entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your device — which matters for signed contracts and filled forms that contain personal data.

Is there a file size or page limit?

No. There is no size or page cap. Flattening runs locally, so the only practical limit is your device's available memory.
