How to convert a PDF to Excel online

  1. Choose a PDF file using the upload button or drag it onto the drop zone.
  2. Select which pages to process, or leave the default to convert the whole document.
  3. Click Convert — the tool scans each page and maps table rows and columns into spreadsheet cells.
  4. Download the CSV file and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet app.

How table detection works

The converter reads the text layer of your PDF and uses the X/Y position of each character to reconstruct the column-and-row structure. Characters that share the same horizontal band are grouped into a row; columns are inferred from consistent vertical alignment across rows. The result is a grid where each cell contains the text that was in that position — no manual reformatting required. This works well on PDFs exported from Word, Excel, or accounting software, because those files embed real text. If your PDF is a scan or a photographed document, the text layer is missing; run it through the OCR PDF tool first to create a searchable copy, then come back here to extract the table.

When to use PDF to Excel

Use this tool any time you need to get structured data out of a PDF and into a format you can work with. Common cases: pulling quarterly figures out of a financial statement so you can build your own model; copying a vendor price list into a sheet to compare against internal costs; extracting survey results or attendance records from a report so you can sort and filter without retyping every cell. It is also useful when a supplier sends an invoice as a PDF and you need the line items in a system that only accepts CSV imports.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool work on scanned PDFs?

Scanned PDFs are image-based, so the converter cannot read text directly from them. Run the file through VoxScan's OCR PDF tool first to make the text selectable, then use PDF to Excel to extract the table data.

Will my formulas or cell formatting carry over?

No. The tool reads text and positional data from the PDF and maps rows and columns into spreadsheet cells. Formulas, colors, fonts, and merged cells are not preserved — the output is raw data you can then format and calculate in Excel or Google Sheets.

What file format does the download produce?

The tool outputs a CSV file (comma-separated values). CSV opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, LibreOffice Calc, and any other spreadsheet application. You can save it as an XLSX file from within those apps once it is open.

Can it handle multiple tables across several pages?

Yes. You can choose which pages to process before converting. Each table region detected on those pages is written to the CSV in order, separated by blank rows so the boundaries stay clear when you open the file.

Is my financial data sent to a server?

No data leaves your device. The entire conversion runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Balance sheets, invoices, and other sensitive documents are never uploaded anywhere.
