Raise the contrast slider until faint text turns solid. If the page is dark overall, raise brightness too; if it's washed out, lower brightness slightly and push contrast higher.

Why scans come out faint in the first place
Three usual suspects: the scanner's auto-exposure decided the page was brighter than it really was; the original was printed on aged or colored paper; or the source was written in pencil or light ink. In all three cases the information is still in the file — the pixels just sit too close together in tone. Raising contrast spreads them apart: light areas get lighter, dark areas get darker, and text edges become distinct again.
Brightness vs. contrast — which slider do you actually need?
Brightness moves every pixel lighter or darker by the same amount — use it when the whole page is too dark or too light. Contrast changes the distance between light and dark — use it when text is faint or the background is dirty gray. Most bad scans need a modest brightness lift plus a stronger contrast push. If color is distracting (yellow paper, coffee stains), drop saturation or switch to grayscale for a clean black-and-white result that also prints cheaper.
